Joe Fisherman Village

Can wind down at the beach was calm the soul.

This was the "beranda" at Joe Fisherman's Village, where we stayed for those two and a half weeks we disappeared from the face of the Earth. Although a bit run down, it was very comfortable and featured some of the best seafood I've ever had. The owners, a couple named Joe and Zura, were devote Muslims. They were kind, giving, helpful, and gracious, even to the spoiled brats and burnouts who checked in. Having been in a Muslim country for over a month, I must say I'm not wholly impressed with the religion's practitioners. Joe and Zura, with their quick wit, candor, and kindness were wonderful examples of how religion can inform, heal, and beautify when practiced with a true heart.

Pangkor Islang is an idyllic island set in the Straights of Malacca off the west coast of Malaysia. Unlike so many tourists spots, it has retained much of it's nature warm social atmosphere. The beaches are unspoiled and its forest specially preserved for nature lovers. Situated far from town developed ares, the island boasts of crystal clear waters nurturing bountiful growths of colorful corals.

Exotic flora and fauna abound in this area. Rare orchids can be seen along jungle treks. butterflies 'tamely' land on outstretched palms. Colorful birds can be seen perched on the trees at the hill slopes. You may possibly catch a glimpse of monkeys swinging from the branches.
